Portage DPS: String of mail thefts in Kalamazoo Co.

PORTAGE, Mich. (WOOD) — Authorities are warning residents after reports of mail being stolen from mailboxes throughout Kalamazoo County.

The Portage Department of Public Safety says the suspects drive through neighborhoods opening mailboxes to find checks, credit cards and debit cards. The cards and checks are then used at nearby banks and businesses.

Police are advising residents to avoid putting sensitive mail in their mailboxes any longer than necessary. If you’re going to be away longer than a couple days, authorities recommend using the U.S. Postal Service’s hold mail service.

If you see any suspicious activity at your mailbox, you are asked to call the Portage Department of Public Safety immediately at 269.329.4567 or Silent Observer at 269.343.2100.
