Shooting outside Ottawa Hills HS leads to lockdowns

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Ottawa Hills High School, Grand Rapids Christian Schools excluding Rockford Christian, and Immaculate Heart of Mary elementary school are on lockdown following a shooting near Ottawa Hills.

Around 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Grand Rapids police say two 17-year-old boys were walking down the street just beyond school property when they spotted a black car driving eastbound on Burton Street SE. The teens told police they heard gunshots coming from the vehicle, and started to run.

Officers initially said one of the teenagers suffered a gunshot wound to his foot; Capt. Geoff Collard with the Grand Rapids Police Department later wouldn't specify where the teen was wounded, but said the victim's injuries are not life-threatening.

The injured teen sought refuge at Ottawa Hills High School; officers found him in the auditorium parking lot of the school, located at 2055 Rosewood Ave. SE.

Grand Rapids Public Schools spokesman John Helmholdt says the victim is not a current student. Police said the other teen isn't a student either.
