Kent County man sickened by West Nile virus dies

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A Kent County resident has died from complications caused by the West Nile virus, the Kent County Health Department announced Monday.

Health officials say the man in his 80s had been hospitalized with the virus when he died over the weekend.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services previously reported one death in Wayne County this summer, related to West Nile. Statewide, at least eight people have been sickened by the mosquito-borne virus, including another person in Berrien County. The majority of those confirmed cases involved people who have been hospitalized because of West Nile.

This is the first confirmed death connected to the West Nile virus in Kent County since 2012, and only the eighth virus-related death in the county.
