MSP breaks ground on new 6th District Headquarters

WALKER, Mich. (WOOD) — Michigan State Police broke ground on their new 6th District Headquarters on Thursday.

State legislators approved $57 million for the new facility that will combine the Rockford Post, 6th District Headquarters and the MSP Crime Laboratory into one place in Walker.

Troopers have worked at the current location in Rockford for around 80 years, but the two-story brick building constructed in the 1930s has become too cramped for a modern police operation. The Rockford Post is also in a location that’s not convenient to the modern expressway system, slowing response times.

The new headquarters is located off Walker Avenue, south of 4 Mile Road, a location authorities say will help boost response times. Troopers hope to move in by 2020.
