Semi driver says he took risk to prevent tragedy

WYOMING, Mich. (WOOD) — A semi driver lost his job after cutting of an erratic driver on a busy West Michigan highway in an attempt to save lives.

It happened around 8:30 p.m. Wednesday after on eastbound M-6 near Byron Center Avenue in Wyoming.

Cody Kooman saw a Honda Pilot swerving erratically, called 911 and then took matters into his own hands by stopping his semi at an angle on the highway to pin in the reckless driver.

“I just used my semi tractor to stop this vehicle right there,” Kooman said. “The Honda Pilot that was erratically driving, he was having a diabetic seizure … I was gonna hit him and knock him off the road before he killed anybody.”

Nobody was hit or injured by Kooman’s actions, and he was on the phone with dispatchers at the time of the incident.

“I told the Kent County dispatcher that somebody has to do something, somebody has to get the police out there and stop this guy before he either kills himself or kills somebody else,” Kooman said.

He says the erratic driver was having a diabetic seizure and ultimately got the help he needed.
