KDPS: Man shot during apparent break-in

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — Police in Kalamazoo are investigating after a man who was apparently trying to break into a home was shot Tuesday evening.

It happened around 7:50 p.m. in the 200 block of Richard Avenue off of S. Burdick Street.

When Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety officers were called there on multiple reports of a shooting, they found a 46-year-old Kalamazoo man with a gunshot wound to the torso. He was hospitalized and listed in critical condition.

Police say the shooter approached them and said the 46-year-old had tried to break into the home where the shooter was, at which that point the shooter opened fire.

Police say the shooter, whose name was not released Tuesday night, is cooperating with their investigation. They say there are no other suspects and no threat to the public.
