Walmart to roll out 'Pickup Tower' at W. MI store

PAW PAW, Mich. (WOOD) — Visitors to a West Michigan Walmart will soon have a new option to skip the checkout lane and aisles.

A company spokesperson confirms the Walmart Supercenter in Paw Paw is scheduled to get a “Pickup Tower” sometime this year.

Walmart says the tower is similar to a high-tech vending machine. It allows customers to pick up their online orders by scanning a bar code sent to their smartphone after their order is submitted. Walmart.com customers can choose to use the tower by selecting “pickup” at checkout.

A Walmart official says if the product is in store, the order is typically ready within a few hours.

Three Walmart stores in Michigan already have pickup towers. The company plans to expand the service to 11 more stores in the state this fiscal year. The Paw Paw store is the only one in West Michigan slated to get a pickup tower at this time.

Walmart says it’s also expanding its online grocery pickup service to eight more Michigan stores, including its store at 6065 Gull Road in Kalamazoo. That location is slated to start the service in late July.
