Suspect in Grand Rapids standoff arrested

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Grand Rapids police have arrested the suspect in an hourslong standoff in Grand Rapids Wednesday.

Tarrel Jammal Washington, 27, was arrested Thursday after a foot pursuit in the 800 block of Burton Street, west of Eastern Avenue. He is being lodged on previous arrest warrants while police investigate Wednesday’s incident.

The standoff happened at a residence in the 100 block of Dale Street between Monroe and Center avenues on the city’s northeast side.

Police said a witness called authorities around 12:30 a.m. after allegedly seeing Washington threaten a 33-year-old woman with a handgun inside the house.

Negotiators proceeded to attempt to make contact with the residence, but were unsuccessful. Because of the failed attempts, officers weren’t sure if the lack of cooperation was due to existing arrest warrants for Washington and the woman or if she was being held against her will.

Later in the morning, officers cleared the house and found the woman hiding inside and was taken into custody for her outstanding warrants. Washington wasn’t inside the home at the time.
