Semi-truck downs poles, damages sign along Alpine Ave.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A busy corridor in Grand Rapids is closed after a semi-truck took out several utility poles.

The incident happened just after 1 p.m. in the 1900 block of Alpine Avenue NW near Ann Street, close to the Grand Rapids-Walker city border.

It appeared a sign to a business was also shattered by the semi-truck, which continued heading north, according to Grand Rapids police. It's unclear if the driver knew about the damage.

As of 1:40 p.m., officers had shut down Alpine Avenue NW near Ann Street. Drivers are asked to avoid the area.

Consumers Energy's outage map shows fewer than 20 customers are without power in the area. Utility workers are assessing the situation and there is no estimate for when power will be restored.
