Phase 1 of GR biodigester project complete

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — The first phase of the new biodigester system in Grand Rapids is complete and is now accepting waste from Founder’s Brewing Company.

The 2-mile-long pipeline lies under Market Avenue SW and flows into the city's Water Resource Recovery Facility. The $4 million first phase allows an estimated amount of 140,000 gallons a day to reach the facility.

The second phase will start in 2019 after the city’s biodigestion project is completed.

Overall, the biodigester system is expected to cost $38 million and create energy to be used for electricity in Grand Rapids.
