DETROIT, Mich. (WOOD) — The Detroit Pistons have tapped the former head coach of the Toronto Raptors to be its next leader, according to ESPN.
Dwane Casey has agreed to a five-year deal, league sources tell ESPN. He replaces Stan Van Gundy, who was fired in May.
Earlier this year, the Raptors celebrated their 300th win under Casey, who also helped pave the way to their first-place finish in the Eastern Conference. The Raptors then outplayed the Washington Wizards in the playoffs, but were swept by the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Casey was fired in May, shortly after being dubbed Coach of the Year by the National Basketball Coach’s Association.
Casey was on the short list of potentials, along with San Antonio Spurs assistant Ime Udoka and University of Michigan head coach John Beilien. Last week, Beilein announced he would be returning to Ann Arbor next season.
