Run honoring fallen officers raises nearly $6K

OLIVE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (via WOOD TV 8) — A Kent County reserve deputy on Thursday finished his 160-mile run across the state to honor the 594 Michigan police officers who have died in the line of duty.

Matt Garbarino arrived at the Protector Monument here at the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office in West Olive shortly before 5:20 p.m.

He started his run Monday morning at the Fallen Heroes Memorial in Pontiac. Along the way, he carried the Thin Blue Line American flag for fallen officers.

"It's hard to put into word the experiences this week," Garbarino told a crowd assembled at his finish line in West Olive. "Certainly, I did this run, but this wasn't about me. It was about everybody in law enforcement that is here and can't be here. And the families that I have met from Day 1 through Day 4 just take my breath away, honestly."
