MUSKEGON, Mich. (WOOD) — Mona Shores High School's athletic director has resigned after being suspended by the district.
Ryan Portenga announced his resignation Thursday in a letter to the school’s interim superintendent, Bill O’Brien. The move came after the district suspended Portenga for 10 days without pay for an unspecified ethics violation, O'Brien confirmed.
“...I broke the trust expected of me – and will forever own the mistakes that I made. I let down my family, my colleagues, and all of Sailor Nation. Not only am I incredibly sorry, but I pray that my resignation brings peace to those affected by my actions,” Portenga stated in his resignation letter.
In a message sent to the Mona Shores community, O’Brien said Portenga’s resignation takes immediate effect.
O'Brien said the district will tap students, parents, staff and community for input when it begins its search for a new high school athletic director by the end of the week.
