NEWTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — Michigan State Police say an armed homeowner was investigating a loud noise near his front door when he was greeted by gunfire in Calhoun County.
The shooting happened around 12:30 a.m. Thursday in the 6000 block of J Drive S in Newton Township, about 12 miles south of Battle Creek.
State police say the man was armed with a shotgun when he went outside to check the area and discovered the suspect, who repeatedly fired a gun at him. One of the rounds hit the homeowner in his hand.
The suspect ran from the scene. He was last seen wearing blue jeans, a gray t-shirt and a black ski mask.
Police are calling the incident an attempted home invasion. Anyone with information leading to the suspect is asked to call the Michigan State Police Marshall post at 269.558.0500.
