Failing equipment blamed for Kent County power outages

BYRON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — A Consumers Energy spokesperson blamed equipment failures for a pair of outages that impacted more than 1,500 homes and businesses in Kent County Wednesday morning.

The outage in northern Grand Rapids was first reported to the company at 4:21 a.m. Power was restored to the 514 customers affected later Wednesday morning.

Crews restored power to 1,344 customers around Wilson Avenue SW and M-6 in Byron Township around 6:30 a.m., according to the Consumers Energy outage map. That outage was reported about two hours earlier.

Consumers Energy traced the Grand Rapids outage to failing equipment in a substation on Michigan Street NE.
