1 hospitalized after home invasion turns into assault

BURLINGTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — One person was taken to the  hospital Tuesday after a home invasion turned into an assault in Calhoun  County.

The incident happened around 6:15 a.m. at a residence in the 4000 block of 9 1/2 Mile Road, near O-Drive S.

Authorities  said a 26-year-old Burlington Township man forced his way into the home  and was met by the homeowner, when a struggle began and the homeowner  attempted to keep the suspect from entering.

A  22-year-old Litchfield man was in the home at the time of the attempted  break-in and attempted to assist the homeowner while armed with a  handgun. Authorities said he hit the suspect with the butt of the  handgun, but was overpowered and strangled by the suspect until he lost  consciousness.

A Michigan State Police release said the homeowner and suspect knew each other.

The  Litchfield man was taken to an area hospital to be treated for injuries  that weren’t life-threatening. Another woman and a 10-month-old infant  were in the home during the incident, but weren’t harmed.

The suspect is being held at the Calhoun County jail on assault and home invasion charges.

Anyone  with information on the incident is asked to contact the Michigan State  Police Marshall Post at 269.558.0500 or Silent Observer at  269.964.3888.
