Man killed in fiery US-131 crash in Kent Co. ID'd

PLAINFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — Authorities have identified the man who was killed in a fiery three-car crash on US-131 north of Grand Rapids Thursday.

Friday, Michigan State Police identified the man as 64-year-old Kendell M. Martin.

The wreck happened in the northbound lanes near Pine Island Drive in Plainfield Township. MSP said that as northbound traffic slowed because of another crash near Post, one car rear-ended another.

Martin, who was the driver of the car that was rear-ended, died at the scene.

The car that rear-ended him caught fire. Two passersby pulled the driver, a 56-year-old man from Stanton, free. He was taken to a Grand Rapids hospital.

A third vehicle was also involved. The driver of that car, a 60-year-old Grand Rapids man, wasn't hurt.

The crash remains under investigation.
