OAKFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — The driver who allegedly caused a Jan. 4 crash that killed a Sand Lake father and his Marine son is now charged with two counts of second-degree murder.

Joseph Hanna, 39, of Sparta was booked in the Kent County Jail Wednesday on the murder charges, as well as two counts of operating while intoxicated causing death, and two counts of reckless driving causing death.

Aero Med got lost on the way to the scene in rural Oakfield Township, west of Greenville and never made it. The pilot said the issue was due to a software issue with the map.

Marine Lance Cpl. Joel Kinsey, 20, died at the scene. He was a passenger in the other vehicle.

His father, 48-year-old Jerry Kinsey, died at the hospital days after the crash, according to his online obituary.

Court documents obtained by 24 Hour News 8 show that Hanna was reportedly driving while under the influence of marijuana.

Hanna is being charged as a habitual offender. Kent County court documents reveal he was convicted of an attempted larceny in 1998.
