GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A new report from a national police accreditation group is scoring high marks for the Grand Rapids Police Department.
CALEA, the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, recently finished an in-depth study of the department.
“I don't think 'glowing' is inappropriate,” GRPD Chief David Rahinsky said of the report and its reflection on his department.
As a result, Rahinsky said his department has been recommended for accreditation from CALEA, and will formally receive it at a conference in Grand Rapids this summer. He said only 4 percent of police agencies have obtained the recognition.
“In terms of a gold seal, or a standard that you want to aspire to — CALEA is it,” Rahinsky explained.
It took about a year for CALEA to conduct their study and complete the 22-page report. They reviewed GRPD policies and procedures before sending a team to meet with the department and community members.
