Willis trial testimony to turn to Heeringa case

MUSKEGON, Mich. (WOOD) — Testimony will resume Wednesday morning in the trial of Jeffrey Willis, who's accused of kidnapping and killing Jessica Heeringa five years ago.

Testimony should focus on the details of the Heeringa case. Her boyfriend, also the father of her son, is expected to testify during the trial, though it's not yet known precisely when.

During opening statements Tuesday, Muskegon County Prosecutor D.J. Hilson worked to present Willis as a serial killer, telling jurors about Willis' previous conviction for the murder of Rebekah Blestch, disturbing items in his minivan and suspicious files on his electronic devices.

Public Defender Fred Johnson, Willis' attorney, worked to keep the focus squarely on the Heeringa case. He pointed out that there's not much evidence linking his client to Heeringa, whose body was never found after her April 26, 2013, disappearance.
