Dispatchers warn of 911 caller ID scam

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Authorities are warning citizens of a scam involving fake caller IDs.

People are receiving calls saying a family member was injured in a crash with caller IDs that display as being from 911. The caller would ask for personal information

Dispatchers are informing residents that all calls residents would receive from them will come from a 10-digit administrative phone number. The only instance the ID would appear as 911 is in the form of a text.

If residents question the validity of a caller presenting themselves as a dispatcher or another public safety agency, they are urged to contact their county's central dispatch.
