Holland church hosting discussion following high-risk stop

HOLLAND, Mich. (WOOD) — A Holland church is hosting a community conversation Monday following a traffic stop that has some questioning the officers’ use of force.

Holland Department of Public Safety officers were searching for a suspect involved in a domestic assault complaint Friday morning.

Police said officers were told the suspect assaulted a woman and stopped her from calling 911 by taking her phone and smashing it on the ground before leaving. Officers were also told the suspect was in possession of a handgun at the time.

Around 6:15 p.m. Friday, officers located the suspect’s vehicle near the intersection of W 17th Street and Maple Avenue and conducted a traffic stop. Because police had received reports that the suspect was armed, they treated it as a high-risk stop.
