WWII soldier given proper burial after cremains found

AUGUSTA, Mich. (WOOD) — A World War II veteran whose unclaimed cremains were found in a basement last year was given a fitting burial Friday as a group of people honored the veteran time nearly forgot.

Although John Neal died in 2006, the urn holding his cremains wasn’t found until last year.

This journey began when two men met under unexpected circumstances. One was John Neal, a World War II veteran. The other, John Olson, a veteran of the Vietnam War.

Olson found the cremated remains of Neal in the basement of Degage Ministries last year. Nobody knows how or when the cremains got there.

“I had the urn in my office on the desk,” said Olson. “And that’s where it’s been sitting. It’s kind of a reminder for me every time I went back to my desk that I have a mission to do.”
