GRFD celebrates 50K smoke alarm installations

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — The Grand Rapids Fire Department celebrated a milestone Thursday it has been working towards since 2013.

On Thursday, the department installed smoke alarm No. 50,000 and celebrated the occasion with an event with Fire Chief John Lehman and Mayor Rosalynn Bliss.

“I really want to say thanks to the fire chief for his leadership,” Bliss said. “We are so blessed to have a fire department that is so committed, but really focused on prevention.”

The Grand Rapids Fire Department has installed alarms in over 8,200 Grand Rapids homes since the inception of the Residential Safety Program.

The Residential Safety Program offers free installation of smoke detectors and home safety assessments to Grand Rapids homeowners. Those interested in the program can call 311.
