Woman found dead days after fire ID'd

MUSKEGON HEIGHTS, Mich. (WOOD) — Family members have identified the woman whose body was found in a Muskegon Heights home days after a fire there.

Yolanda Tate was found inside the vacant home Tuesday after crews spent an hour getting the flames under control.

The fire happened around 4:38 a.m. Saturday in the 2900 block of 6th Street. The first crews on scene found flames burning through the roof of the home in addition to fire on the first and second floors.

Tate’s body wasn’t found until Michigan State Police fire investigators were going through the second floor of the building. It wasn’t immediately clear how she died, but autopsy results are expected by the end of the week.

Muskegon Heights Fire Chief Christopher Dean said the woman’s body was missed in part because it was partially covered by debris from the collapsed roof and because crews were done working inside the home before daylight, and their visibility was limited.
