Lockdown lifted at Grand Rapids school; 2 arrested

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A school in Grand Rapids was briefly placed on lockdown Wednesday morning.

The Gerald R. Ford Academic Center, located near the intersection of Franklin Street and Madison Avenue, was on lockdown for nearly an hour.

It started around 9:30 a.m. when police say a fight between two people across the street spilled into the roadway. One person was seen armed with a pipe.

The school was placed on lockdown when one of them tried to get inside. District spokesperson John Helmholdt said the person did not get into the school.

Police said officers responded within 30 seconds, then surrounded a house in the 800 block Madison Avenue as they searched for the suspects.

After searching the house, two people were arrested — one in connection to the assault and the other on an unrelated charge.

Helmholdt said the school issued a robocall to all parents of students at the school, and a letter will be sent home Wednesday afternoon.

"We want to commend the staff in the main office. They took quick and decisive action in accordance with our protocols and their training," the district said in a statement.
