Former GM plant site officially cleaned up

WYOMING, Mich. (WOOD) — General Motors announced a decade ago it would shutter its plant on 36th Street in Wyoming plant. It has taken years, but every vestige of the manufacturing that went on there has been removed.

"It's certainly not unusual for a site this size," David Favero, deputy cleanup manager for RACER Trust, said of how long the project took.

Detroit-based RACER Trust did the water and soil testing, used dump trucks to haul away contaminated soil, and brought in clean dirt.

Only days ago, the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality certified that the site's active remediation is complete.

"What it actually now finally says is we have a clean site," Wyoming Mayor Jack Poll told 24 Hour News 8 Wednesday. "This is basically the green light, people can come and we don't have to worry about anything that could be contaminating there."

Numerous proposals have come and gone, including one company that said it was bringing a major manufacturing site to the area before the plan stalled out.

Poll said the potential contamination was an impediment to moving forward.

"It's something that comes up in every conversation that we have with individuals for that site and now it doesn't have to be a concern of anyone," Poll said.
