Ford Airport to move, expand cell phone lot

CASCADE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — The Gerald R. Ford International Airport board approved a motion Wednesday morning to move the airports cell phone lot and expand it.

The cell phone lot is a designated area where drivers can wait for a short period of time to pick up people flying into the airport.

The current cell phone lot is located along Ross Drive at the airport and has 26 spaces.

According to the airport, there is a safety concern with the current location due to the increased construction traffic along the drive caused by the current aircraft apron reconstruction project.

The new cell phone lot will be located on Pederson Court.

The new lot would have 30 spaces designated for people waiting for people picking up their friends and family, and 30 spaces reserved for ride share drivers for companies such as Uber and Lyft.

The airport is currently working with Uber on a contract that would allow their drivers to park in the lot and would likely add Lyft after that contract is in place.

Currently, drivers for ride share companies are not allowed to wait in the cell phone lot to pick up passengers.

There is not set date for the start of the new lot, however a representative for the airport said it will likely happen soon.
