Grand Rapids church damaged by fire; arson suspected

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Federal authorities are involved in an investigation into a suspected arson at a Grand Rapids church.

The Grand Rapids Fire Department says the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is helping in the investigation into the fire at Servant’s Community Church, at 53 Daloney Ave. SW.

The fire happened Saturday night and burned the church’s front doors. The GRFD says it’s treating the fire as an intentional act.

“We are saddened by an act of arson last night that caused significant damage to our front doors,” the church posted on Facebook early Sunday. “Our front doors are a symbol of welcome into God's love in this lost and broken world.”

The church still held its Sunday morning service and said it plans to host its Wednesday community meal, as scheduled.
