GRPD: Man shoots airsoft gun at officers, crashes moped

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Grand Rapids police say no one was seriously injured Sunday morning when a man shot an airsoft gun at officers and then crashed his moped.

The Grand Rapids Police Department said the situation started at Joe Taylor Park, when a 41-year-old Wyoming man pulled out what appeared to be a gun and fired it at a police cruiser. Officers took cover, called for backup and did not return fire.

The suspect eventually took off on a moped, still firing at officers.

Around 7:20 a.m., the man crashed his moped into a car at the intersection of Wealthy Street and Fuller Avenue, less than half a mile from the park. The suspect sustained minor bruises and scrapes. The driver of the car was not hurt.

After the crash, police said the man started shouting at officers that he wanted to die. GRPD Sgt. Cathy Williams said it appeared the man was attempting to commit "suicide by cop."
