Nurses claim racial discrimination at rehab center

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Six nurses at a rehabilitation center in Zeeland are suing, saying they were discriminated against because they are black.

In the lawsuit filed in federal court April 11, the six certified nursing assistants say that while working at Providence Healthcare & Rehabilitation Center over the past several years, some patients said they didn't want any African-Americans providing their care and the center accommodated those requests.

The suit says that in those situations, the plaintiffs were replaced with white nurses. In some cases when they cared for the patients, the suit claims, the patients called them racist names.

The suit says the women felt "harassed, humiliated and discriminated against."

They complained to the center about the situation in January 2018 and informed its administrator that they were going to sue. The lawsuit claims that the center then retaliated, assigning one of the women double the number of patients, suspending her and claiming she had abused a resident, which the lawsuit says isn't true. That woman quit as a result.
