Weekend: Rain, freezing rain, possible ice storm

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A nasty mix of rain changing to freezing rain, sleet then to snow will occur this weekend. What type of precipitation and how much you get will depend on where you live.

A powerful low pressure system will move from the Central Plains to the southern Great Lakes, whipping up strong winds and heavy rain for most of the Lower Peninsula Friday night through early Saturday.

Cold air will push the transition line from rain to freezing rain/sleet from north to south through Saturday.

Track of storm into southern Great Lakes

Freezing rain is likely north of Grand Rapids initially Saturday, but a razor-thin margin of a degree or two means some icing is possible even south of Grand Rapids, Holland and Lansing.

Areas near I-94 should remain warm enough so all precipitation will be rain.

A Winter Storm Watch has been issued for Ottawa, Kent and Ionia counties to the north for this weekend's storm. The National Weather Service will likely upgrade this later Friday.
