Volunteers step in as Flint water stations close

ZEELAND, Mich. (WOOD) — The state-backed program to distributed bottled water in Flint is wrapping up.

The state says water from the city's pipes is good to drink and has tested below safety limits for lead and copper for about two years, but that's not enough for some in Flint. They don't trust the system that leached lead because corrosive water from the Flint River wasn't properly treated.

"I don't know what I'm going to do and this was the only thing that could at least help, with the bottled water," Flint resident Marla Garland said.

Flint is working to replace the lead pipes, but doesn't expect to finish the overhaul until the end of 2019.

"They're still replacing the pipes. They still haven't fixed the water problem at our public schools," Flint resident added Gary Bernard said.

Gary Howell of Zeeland, along with the help of militia groups around the state, are saying they'll step in to give out bottled water.
