South Haven halts some events amid noise gripes

SOUTH HAVEN, Mich. (WOOD) — South Haven city leaders are curbing the growing number of events taking over South Beach or Riverfront Park – at least for now.

"Over the last several months I've had more complaints regarding the noise and events down at South Beach and Riverfront Park than any other complaint in town,”  said council member Steve Schlack.

Schlack says it wasn't always that way.

"Fifteen, 20 years ago, it wasn't an issue. But now it seems like every weekend, every Sunday, every Saturday, there's an event going on, and they just want some relief to enjoy their quiet time during the weekend when they're off as well,” he said.

People who call South Haven home aren’t happy about the seemingly constant events that stretch from spring until fall. Now the city council is working to find a balance by creating guidelines to help it decide which festivals, concerts and shows to approve.

“That's what prompted the moratorium, I think, was that we don't really have set policies. Basically, you fill out an application for an event, and if they meet all the criteria then the event is usually authorized,” said Schlack.

Until those policies are implemented, no new events will be allowed on South Haven’s South Beach or in Riverfront Park.
