Bank saves home buyers from $180K scam

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — The Kent County Sheriff’s Department is warning citizens after a scam nearly cost its victims approximately $180,000.

The victims were in the process of purchasing a new home and were scheduled to be closing on it in the near future. They received an email that appeared to come from their bank requesting them to wire the funds instead of bringing a cashier’s check with them to closing.

A Kent County Sheriff’s Department release said the email appeared to be legitimate, as it included the home’s address, a file number and their builder’s information. The victims then wired nearly $180,000 to what they thought was the title office.
