90-year-old finally gets high school diploma

GREENVILLE, Mich. (WOOD) — Bud Taylor graduated in 1945 but because he was called to serve in World War II, he never received his high school diploma.

The Greenville High School graduate is now 90 years old. With the help of his family and the school district, he finally got the piece of paper he was owed Monday evening.

Taylor said he enlisted in the U.S. Navy the December before he graduated. He and the friends who enlisted with him were promised they would make their commencement ceremony date, he said. But it didn't happen that way.

Some of his classmates were called to serve as early as March the following year, Taylor said. His call came two days before graduation. The Greenville superintendent tried to contact the military to push back his leave date, but the effort was in vain.

"I felt I missed something there because they all got to walk across the stage and I didn't," Taylor told 24 Hour News 8 Tuesday.
