Man pleads in crash that killed mom, injured boys

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A driver who crashed his pickup truck into a car, killing a mother and seriously injuring her twin boys, is going to prison.

Douglas Crystal appeared in court Monday where he pleaded no contest to three felonies in connection to the Sept. 15 crash that killed Meranda Baguss and injured her 5-year-old sons, Tony and Chauncey Anthony.

In November, police testified Crystal’s pickup truck reached speeds of at least 91 mph before crashing into the 33-year-old mother’s car at Ritchie Avenue and 15 Mile Road in Courtland Township.

Witnesses said Crystal confessed to crawling out the window and making his way through the woods to his home on Stout Avenue, about a mile and a half from the crash.

However, witnesses said Crystal spotted police there and stayed away until after 4 a.m.
