Local gathering honors MLK on 50th anniversary of death

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Around the country and here in West Michigan, the life and times of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. were remembered on the 50th anniversary of his assassination.

One event was hosted by the Kent County Board of Commissioners and the county's Cultural Insight Council.

As the cold winds crossed Calder Plaza in Grand Rapids during the noon hour Wednesday, black and white, young and old sang, joined hands and prayed. There was talk about the accomplishments realized and the challenges that remain half a century after King’s death.
