MSP: Suspect shot by trooper near Hastings

RUTLAND TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — A man was shot by a Michigan State Police trooper southwest of Hastings Monday evening after showing what was later found to be an airsoft gun, authorities say.

MSP says the suspect's wounds are not believed to be life-threatening.

The officer-involved shooting happened around 6:30 p.m. in the parking lot of Thornapple Valley Church off M-43 north of Goodwill Road in Rutland Township.

MSP says it was attempting to arrest the suspect, a 36-year-old white Middleville man, on four outstanding felony warrants and got word he was in the church parking lot.

MSP Inspector Dale Hinz said the suspect was trying to leave the church parking lot when the trooper blocked his way. Hinz said the suspect then got out of his vehicle and displayed what appeared to be a gun. MSP says the suspect didn't obey when the trooper ordered him repeatedly to drop it, at which point the trooper shot him.

It was later discovered the gun the suspect was carrying was actually a realistic-looking airsoft pistol, Hinz said.

The suspect was taken to Borgess Hospital in Kalamazoo for treatment. Upon his release, he will be taken into police custody on four felony charges.

No officers were injured.
