Autopsy: Man shot by police died from self-inflicted wound

The shooting happened around 5:40 p.m. Friday at Resurrection Cemetery at 44th Street and Clyde Park Avenue SW.

Authorities say the 52-year-old Wayland man was threatening suicide. When officers made contact with him, he pulled out a handgun and shot himself in the head, according to the Kent County Sheriff’s Office. The officers also shot the man three times, but the medical examiner concluded those wounds weren’t fatal during an autopsy Saturday.

The man was taken to a hospital where he later died from his injuries.

The sheriff’s office says the investigation into the officer-involved shooting is ongoing. Their findings will be forwarded to the Kent County Prosecutor’s Office for review.
