State proposing registration for paddlecraft

LANSING, Mich. (WOOD) — Paddle sports enthusiasts may have to pay a little more to get out on the water in 2019 if the Michigan legislature considers a resolution requiring registration of all kayaks, canoes, paddle boards and similar boats.

The Michigan State Waterways Commission, which serves as an advisory committee to the Department of Natural Resources, is trying to gain enough momentum and support on the proposal for the legislature to review it.

"Due to the high use of kayaks and paddleboards, safety issues have come up," DNR Chief of Parks and Recreation, Ronald Olson said.

There's an influx of people out in kayaks, canoes and paddleboards on public waters. According to the Michigan State Waterways Commission, the rate of participation in paddle sports in increasing by 7 percent each year with more than 600,000 paddlecraft operating in Michigan.
