GRPD youth policy to be revealed Tuesday

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — The images of 11-year-old Honestie Hodges being handcuffed and placed in the back of a police car are hard to watch and listen to.

Police bodycam video recorded the sobbing girl’s voice as police, investigating an attempted murder, place her in a patrol car.

“It's OK, you're not going to jail," one officer said.

“OK, OK, OK," the crying and obviously frightened girl said.

In December 2017, the Grand Rapids Department was looking for Honestie's aunt — a 40-year-old white woman — who had been accused of trying to stab another person. Officers arrived at the home Honestie shares with her mother on the city's northwest side as she came out the door with two other women. Not knowing who was who or if anyone was armed, officers followed what, at the time, was standard procedure.
