Drive player's mom: ‘Next 24 hours are critical'

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A day after collapsing on the basketball court, Grand Rapids Drive player Zeke Upshaw remained in critical condition at a local hospital.

Zena “Zeke” Upshaw, 26, collapsed during the final seconds of the game at the DeltaPlex Arena Saturday night. A source with knowledge of the matter told 24 Hour News 8 that Upshaw was in cardiac arrest and rushed to Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital as emergency crews worked to save his life.

On Sunday afternoon, Upshaw’s mother Jewel Upshaw told 24 Hour News 8 that her son continued to fight for his life.

“Zeke is being cared for by the best doctors,” she said. “The next 24 hours are critical.”

Those who know the basketball standout, originally from Illinois, were stunned by the news of what happened to him.

“He was fit as a fiddle,” said John Moran, a longtime friend who was one of Zeke Upshaw’s grade school teachers. "Zena was always an excellent young man.”
