KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — A music debate at Western Michigan University has some students wondering why the school pulled the plug on a controversial hip-hop artist for its spring concert.
WMU’s Campus Activities Board sent out a survey, asking students which style of music they would like to see visit campus this spring. They chose hip-hop.
Based on schedules and the school’s budget, an offer was made to have artist Tyler, the Creator perform. But the university wasn’t having it.
“We did submit that offer and we did get denied based on some of his controversy behind him, and that is really where we hit a wall in bringing hip-hop to campus,” said Joseph Sanchez, president of the WMU Campus Activities Board.
