Body found in floodwaters in Kalamazoo ID’d

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — A body was found in floodwaters in Kalamazoo Sunday, police say.

The body was found around 11:10 a.m. Sunday in the 500 block of  Riverview Drive on the city’s northwest side.The Kalamazoo Department of  Public Safety said a passerby spotted the “obviously deceased” man near  a viaduct for trains to cross the Kalamazoo River.

Later Sunday, investigators were back in the area with a dive crew,  searching for more evidence. Authorities say the man’s car was found  underwater in the area.

Monday, police identified the man as 48-year-old James Jackson of Kalamazoo.

Authorities have not released the cause of his death, nor have they given any indication of when he may have died.

Police say they are not treating the death as suspicious at this time, but the case remains under investigation.

The Kalamazoo River crested Sunday morning at nearly 11.7 feet, which is a record. It was already  falling by afternoon and had dropped to 10.5 feet by 9 p.m. Flood stage  is 9 feet.
