GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Grand Rapids police are investigating what caused a woman’s death and left a child in critical condition.
The Grand Rapids Police Department said emergency responders were called to the 200 block of Montgomery Street SE, east of Jefferson Avenue in the Garfield Park neighborhood, around 2:50 p.m. Wednesday on a medical call. The 911 callers said two people in a home there were unconscious.
When emergency responders arrived, they found the woman dead and the injured child.
“There are visible injuries,” GRPD Sgt. Cathy William said, though she did not specify the nature of those injuries. “…It’d be too early to assume what caused her death at this point.”
An autopsy is expected to be conducted Thursday.
Williams could not provide any information about what happened to the child, who family members at the scene told 24 Hour News 8 is a boy.
“We have one victim that is at the hospital right now and (he’s) a child. (He’s) still alive and we don’t know the nature of (his) injuries, but they are described as critical,” Williams said.
The relationship between the woman and child is not yet known. Their names were not released Wednesday.
Police said they were not looking for any suspects.
Residents were asked to avoid the area of Montgomery and Jefferson while investigators worked. People in that area sobbed and hugged one another when they were told what happened.
A police officer on the scene initially told 24 Hour News 8 that shots had been fired. Sgt. Williams, GRPD’s public information officer, later said there was no indication shots were fired.
