BC crews fight 2 fires within hours, blocks of each other

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. (WOOD) — Battle Creek police are trying to determine if two Wednesday morning fires that burned abandoned homes within a blocks of each other were intentionally set.

Lt. Jim Martens tells 24 Hour News 8 the police department is looking into whether the fires are connected and part of a string of larcenies in the area.

The fire department says it was called to the first fire at a home at Seivour Avenue near Rhimes Avenue just before 3 a.m. Wednesday. The fire started at the back of the house and spread to the attic, according to firefighters. No one was injured.

The second fire happened in the 100 block of Meachem Avenue near Seivour Avenue just after 6:15 a.m. Wednesday. Dispatchers say the abandoned house’s porch was on fire.

The investigation is ongoing.
