Hadley leaving KDPS; city manager names first female chief

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety Chief Jeff Hadley announced Monday he will be leaving the department for a new job in Georgia.

Hadley has accepted the chief position at the Chatham County Police Department in Savannah, Georgia. He has been with the department of nine years, according to a city of Kalamazoo news release.

His last day with the department is Wednesday, Nov. 22 when Deputy Chief Karianne Thomas will be appointed chief, the release said.

Thomas, who has been with the department for 23 years, will be the first woman to be named chief of the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety.

“It is an honor to serve this community alongside the men and women of KDPS and we will continue to work tirelessly each day to protect and serve the people of Kalamazoo,” Thomas said in a statement.

Hadley was among 10 finalists for the position of Punta Gorda Police chief. Punta Gorda mayor told 24 Hour News 8 that he had withdrawn from consideration for the position.

Grand Rapids Police Chief David Rahinsky is still in the running for the position in Florida, which he said he applied for in order to get closer to his family.
