3 in custody after officer-involved shooting; 1 injured

MATTAWAN, Mich. (WOOD) — One suspect was hospitalized and two others were arrested following an officer-involved shooting in Mattawan Friday morning.

It happened around 8 a.m. near the intersection of Main Street and W. McGillen Avenue.

Michigan State Police Lt. Chuck Christensen said the three suspects were driving a stolen car when they were stopped by an officer at a Shell Station in Mattawan. The suspects fled, turning onto a dead-end street and driving between two houses before ditching the vehicle and running.

At some point, the Mattawan officer fired his gun, according to Christensen. One female suspect was shot and taken to the hospital, where her condition was stable Friday morning. The two remaining suspects, a man and woman, were arrested after a short search of the area, MSP said.

The superintendent of Mattawan schools said the district was on lockdown from 8:25 a.m. to 10 a.m. as a precautionary measure while authorities searched for the two suspects. Buses en route to schools were rerouted to safe locations, where staff and police played games with the children on board to calm them, the superintendent said.

No officers were hurt during the incident.

Michigan State Police are investigating the shooting then will pass the case to the prosecutor’s office to determine if it was justified.
