Musk Hts shooting victim has gun violence history

MUSKEGON HEIGHTS, Mich. (WOOD) — The man killed in Muskegon Heights early Tuesday was no stranger to illegal weapons, and the gun violence that defined much of his adult life also ended it.

The Muskegon Heights Police Department identified the man who died as 28-year-old Curtis Lee Brown Jr.

He was shot to death between two buildings at a housing complex in the 500 block of Howell Avenue around 2:40 a.m. According to Police Chief Joseph Thomas, Brown was at the complex visiting a girlfriend when the shooting happened.

Police say Brown was shot where he was found, but it appears someone besides responding officers tried to help him. Brown, who was shot in the chest, was rushed to Hackley Hospital, where he died.

Muskegon Heights police are working with the county’s violent crime task force to find the shooter. Investigators believe the person responsible was someone Brown knew and the incident was not a random homicide or drive-by. They say they are building a solid case against a person of interest and expected an arrest soon.
